Apparently, I Wasn't the Only One
When I started No Tops Nation, I wasn’t thinking about how big it could become. I wasn’t counting followers or wondering how many people might eventually recognize our mermaid. I simply wanted to create something that felt like me and represented the way I feel when I’m on the water. Free, confident, comfortable and completely myself.
At first, it was really that simple.
But now, in only our second season, I’m watching No Tops Nation become something I never expected. More people are finding us, wearing our gear, flying our flags and connecting with what this little idea was always supposed to represent.
It’s knowing that so many people seem to get it.
And I have to admit, that’s pretty damn exciting.
I think this is probably the biggest misconception about No Tops Nation.
Yes, I go topless. I’m comfortable doing it, and I’m certainly not going to apologize for it.
But I didn’t create No Tops Nation because I thought every woman should take her top off. I created it because I believe every woman should have the confidence and freedom to make that decision for herself.
There are women who would love to take their top off at the beach, on the boat or somewhere they feel comfortable, but they hesitate.
Maybe they’re unsure how people will react. Maybe they’re worried about being judged. Maybe they’ve simply never given themselves permission to stop worrying about what everybody else thinks.
I understand that.
That’s one of the reasons the mermaid became such an important part of No Tops Nation. To me, she represents the woman who is confident, independent, comfortable in her own skin and just a little bit rebellious.
She’s me.
But I hope she also represents a little piece of a lot of other women.
The first season of No Tops Nation was about figuring things out.
We had an idea. We had the mermaid. We started creating apparel and putting ourselves out there. Some people understood it immediately. Others probably wondered what the hell we were doing. 🤣
That’s okay.
But this season has felt completely different.
Over the past four months, we’ve sold more No Tops Nation gear than we did during all of last year combined.
That’s still a little crazy for me to say.
Even better, I’m seeing our tanks, rash guards, shorts and flags going places that have absolutely nothing to do with me.
They’re showing up on other people’s boats.
They’re going to beaches I’ve never visited.
People I’ve never met are wearing something with our mermaid on it.
And every time I see it, I still get excited.
I Can't Wait To See Where This Goes
I have no idea what No Tops Nation will look like a year from now.
Considering what’s happened in just the last four months, I’m not even going to try to predict it.
What I do know is that we’re going to keep having fun with it.
We’ll keep creating things we actually want to wear.
We’ll keep spending as much time as possible on the water.
I’ll keep being the mermaid.
And we’ll keep standing behind the idea that started all of this in the first place:
If more people keep finding us along the way, even better.

The Best Part Isn't The Sales
Don’t get me wrong. I’m thrilled every time another order comes through.
But the part that means the most to me is realizing that people understand what we’re trying to create.
No Tops Nation has always been about freedom, confidence and enjoying life without worrying so much about what everyone else thinks.
Some people discover us because they love boating.
Some because they’re beach people.
Some because they like the apparel.
Some because they think our mermaid is badass.
And yes, some women find us because they believe they should have the same freedom to take their top off that men have always had.
Different reasons. Same Nation.
That’s what I love about it.
I especially want to say something to the women who understand exactly what I’m talking about when I say they want to take their top off, but haven’t.
You don’t have anything to prove.
No Tops Nation isn’t about pressure. In fact, that would defeat the entire purpose.
Maybe one day you’ll be sitting on a boat, lying on a beach or swimming somewhere beautiful and decide you don’t want to wear your top.
Maybe you won’t.
Either answer is perfectly fine.
But if that little voice in your head is saying, I’d love to, but what will everyone think?, I hope seeing women like me reminds you that being comfortable in your own skin is something worth celebrating.
You get to decide what freedom looks like for you.
